These springs are necessary in swinging the flint housing open to replace the flint. They are often found mangled in old lighters.If the spring is sprung you will often have difficulty fitting it under the housing and not rub on the housing making the striker wheel lock up.

My springs are made from stainless steel and will not rust or corrode like the original. I find lighters with this part damaged.
In my experience mine perform better than the original. My springs fit perfectly on the base of the needle valve thus are less likely to crushed after placing or fall out and be lost if the gas control valve is removed.
