Fatwood, also known as "fat lighter", "lighter wood", "rich lighter", "pine knot", "lighter knot", "heart pine", or "lighter'd" is derived from the heartwood of pine trees. The stump that is left in the ground after a tree has fallen is the primary source of fatwood, as the resin-impregnated heartwood becomes hard and rot-resistant after the tree has died. Wood from other locations can also be used, such as the joints where limbs intersect the trunk. Although most resinous pines can produce fatwood, in the southeastern United States the wood is commonly associated with longleaf pine, which historically was highly valued for its high pitch production.
Because of the flammability of terpene, fatwood is prized for use as kindling in starting fires. It lights quickly even when wet, is very wind resistant, and burns hot enough to light larger pieces of wood. A small piece of fatwood can be used many times to create tinder by shaving small curls and using them to light other larger tinder. The pitch-soaked wood produces an oily, sooty smoke, and it is recommended that one should not cook on a fire until all the fatwood has completely burned out.
These wide-mouth pint canning jars are tightly packed with very finely processed fatwood with the 80-120 pieces weighing anywhere from 3/4 pound to 1 full pound. I realize there is an experience curve but that amount gives me the ability to start 80-120 fires.
We use only trees that have died of natural causes here on The Gnomestead (our small farm/homestead outside of Pittsboro NC). There are no chemicals added.
My daughter and I scour the woods for the right pieces, cut them up and bring them home. We then use a hatchet to break off small chunks. I then spend about 2 hours per jar using a homemade wooden mallet to "baton" a knife through the material to get the smallest pieces possible. A little goes a long way!
Lots of local folks purchase these simply for the smell which can permeate a room with a wonderful fresh pine scent. I have customers who buy them for gifts during the cold months. Other folks use them to start woodstove fires, cooking fires, charcoal, or camp fires. Some folks will light and end with a lighter, or snap them in half and light the broken ends, or even whittle feather type curls before lighting.
